Final Fantasy VII:
Advent Children
by Testuya Nomura

Origin: Japan (2005)

Genre: CG Animation

Starring Voices: Takahiro Sakurai (Cloud Strife), Ayumi Ito (Tifa Lockhart)

The next exciting installment to the FFVII franchise.  This movie is a must-see for Final Fantasy VII fans!  In what may be the Final Fantasy fanatic's wet dream, all of the playable characters come back as well as a few familiar faces from Shinra Corp. and others.  Familiar environments are also shown, such as 7th Heaven, the Church, and Aeris' final resting place.  And of course, the use of Materia is also back, along with that oh so lovable summon: Bahamut!
The story lacks a solid plot, however, this movie makes it clear to you that it is not plot-driven.  Although there are a few gaps in the overall sequence, the story ties in well to the game.  A great majority of the characters make small cameo appearances, simply as a way to get all of them into the movie.  Other than Cloud, Tifa, and Vincent, the other once-playable characters provide little to the progression of the story.  The biggest problem about this movie is that you are expected to have played the game to even have a clue to what is going on.  Of course, this limits the audience base by a huge margin, which may be why it is a straight-to-DVD title.  Still, the evolution in their CG animation is a marvel to look at.
The redeeming quality about this movie for those who haven't played the game is definitely the CG animation.  Advent Chilren has set a new standard for animation and it is a high one at that.  The action sequences are very dramatic and intense.  Playful cinematography angles and strategies add to the marvelous fighting choreography.
Although this movie is marketed toward a select audience, it is still a shining achievement in animation.  This is one of those rare movies that has lived up to the hype.  Does Sephiroth actually come back for this movie?  Well, you'll just have to see the movie.
